Natural Heroes: About the Series

Natural Heroes is a series of independently produced films that share a common theme: people who are actively involved in improving the environment, whether in their local community or on the other side of the world.

The series is the result of a multi-year partnership between KRCB-TV, a Bay area public television station, and GreenTreks Network, a Philadelphia-based nonprofit communications group whose mission is "telling stories that change the world." Their shared vision of programming that inspires optimism and involvement led to the creation of Natural Heroes in 2004.

The series has not only provided a national platform for the message that one person really can make a difference, but it has given exposure to films that audiences would not otherwise have the opportunity to see — and brought attention to issues that may have been ignored in the past.

The first two seasons of Natural Heroes aired on public television stations all across the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada, reaching an estimated 90 million viewers.

The series has been honored with Emmy®, Telly, and Insight awards. Season Three episodes span the globe and take on a fascinating variety of topics with fresh, creative approaches. Subjects range from renewable energy to conservation of marine species, from the meaning of wilderness to the community created by an urban garden.

In an effort to encourage carriage of the series, all episodes of Natural Heroes are made available to PBS affiliate stations free of charge via satellite uplink. All PBS affiliates have the option of showing the programs in real time at the time of uplink, and/or recording episodes for airing at a future date. Season Three uplinks begin in September 2007. About KRCB

Rural California Broadcasting Corporation (KRCB), which serves the North Bay and San Francisco Bay area region, was founded in 1981, and first aired on television in 1984. It currently provides both television and radio programming. The mission of KRCB is “In order to encourage full participation in society and community, KRCB provides educational, informational and cultural telecommunication services in partnership with our community.”

From 1985 through 1989 it was the only affiliate station in the PBS system producing and airing Spanish language only programming, outside of Puerto Rico. And they have often been the only station providing coverage of local and regional election results in their market.
